THE LAND OF I-TOLD-YOU-SO
Pippa Schmidt is an independent-minded, strong-willed, 8 year old apple-loving girl. She knows a few things about a few things and one thing she definitely knows is that her Granny’s silly superstitions are nonsense. But one fateful day, she happens to eat the seeds in her apple and finds herself in “The Land of I Told You So” – a strange fantastical place where every crazy thing you’re ever warned about comes true! And if this isn’t odd enough, she also seems to have an apple tree growing out of her ears! This twisted fairy tale combines songs, dances, mask work, imaginative staging and lot of audience participation to create a truly memorable experience for everyone!

THE EMPEROR’S NEW CLOTHES

In this Shrimp Magnet version of the favourite fairy tale, things are (surprise, surprise) a little different. There’s more to the story than you thought. The Emperor’s not actually all that vain. He’s really just a simple guy who wants more than anything to spend his days out fishing. His advisor is the one who is the fashion victim and she starts the whole Royal Robe Search hullabaloo. When the fancy designer Jean-Biff Gaultier swaggers onto the scene, the only one who can see through his special cloth is Robin, the castle’s potato scrubber. But the grown-ups won’t listen to her. Once again, you’re needed to save the day and save the Emperor from seriously embarrassing himself…

Shrimp Magnet Theatre Company is a not-for-profit collective dedicated to making theatre for families and children fun, challenging and imaginative. With each project we work to use the simple principles of interaction, pantomime and the natural energy and creativity of children in the audience to create memorable shows that are never the same experience twice. Our shows provide a chance for children to become imaginative creators whose ideas and thoughts are not only relevant but also imperative in telling the story.

Shrimp Magnet Theatre Company was founded in the summer of 1999 by Artistic Director Kate Keenan. She began by producing original work at the Lagoon Theatre on the Toronto Islands, which ran 2 shows daily all summer long. In the spring of 2001, Lesley Halferty, a fellow actor and creative kindred spirit joined Kate as co-writer and producer of the company. Kate and Lesley shared a vision for creating shows that would ignite children’s imaginations and affect them in a way that mainstream media cannot. They wanted shows with outside-the-box plots, relatable characters and a happy ending that hinged on the audience’s bright ideas and active participation.

Over the past seven seasons Shrimp Magnet has performed to rave reviews across Canada in theatres, Children’s Festivals, Fringe Festivals and school auditoriums. The company has created 7 original plays, provided work for over 50 emerging artists, and brought the experience of live theatre to over 100,000 children and caregivers.
