SONGS ARE LIKE TATTOOS: A Tribute to Joni Mitchell
In 2008, singer/songwriter Mia Sheard launched what's become the annual Joni Mitchell night at Toronto's Hugh's Room. Mia rounded up some of her favourite singers and musicians to perform. The show sold out very quickly, indicating that there are large numbers of people pining to hear Joni's music performed live. They don't get that opportunity often, as the music is not easy to play, and, therefore is not often performed by other artists. Mia's friends were up to the task. The 2008 show was such a success that Hugh's Room invited it back again this year. For 2009 CBC's Canada Live was on hand to record and broadcast. A sampling of songs from the March 7/09 performance can be listened to at www.myspace.com/jonitribute or listen to the entire concert on CBC’s Concerts on Demand here. The line-up features critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Mia Sheard and an all-star backing band including Kurt Swinghammer (guitar), Chris Gartner (bass), Joan Besen (keys) and Troy Feener (drums). Joining Mia on stage will be four of Toronto’s best musical performers. Past special guests have included Lori Cullen, Layah Jane, Kevin Fox, Valery Gore, David Celia, Sacha Williamson, Kurt Swinghammer, Snowblink and Dan Goldman. “Mia Sheard could make the Tim Hortons jingle sound like an otherworldly invocation to the gods. The local singer-songwriter has a gift for phrasing and a great voice - it wraps itself like a boa constrictor around fragmented melodies, spanning an awesome range and squeezing out a shimmering beauty.” ~ NOW Magazine
